It was noted that the method of teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language is an effective tool for popularizing the Ukrainian language in the world community of specialists representing various fields thanks to the activation of research on the problem of optimizing the process of learning Ukrainian by a foreigner. As a result of the analysis of the stages of formation and development of the methodology of teaching the Ukrainian language as a foreign language, the tendency to standardize the requirements for the levels of Ukrainian language proficiency, the conceptualization of the principles and approaches to teaching the Ukrainian language as a foreign language, which is accompanied by support at the state level and is an important achievement of the modern methodology of teaching the Ukrainian language, has been determined as foreign. The analysis and synthesis of the history of the development of the methodology of teaching the Ukrainian language as a foreign language enabled the conclusion that at the stage of its formation, the methodology of teaching the Ukrainian language as a foreign language was in the "force field" of the methodology of teaching foreign languages ​​and the methodology of teaching the Russian language as a foreign language. However, recently there has been a tendency to standardize and systematize one's own terminological system and establish the lexical minimums of the Ukrainian language in accordance with the various specialties of foreign students.
