Abstract

In the article, the author overviews the main development stages of management practice, analyzes the key components of the concept of management, and outlines the preconditions for development of the modern management practice as a set of scientific and practical principles aimed at the effective functioning of organizations and personnel management. The article describes in detail the world’s oldest models of management: the American one that set up in the current form after the Second World War; the Japanese one that borrowed many approaches from the general management theory and practice, in the first place, those of the U.S.; and the European one the development of which is associated with the processes of European integration and determined by the multinational and multicultural nature of the European Union. The author outlines the key concepts of American, Japanese and European models of management, the impact of social and cultural factors on them, their common and distinctive features, strengths and weaknesses, and their transformations at the current stage of the global economic development. She also lists the factors due to which the American management model is considered most effective. Further, the author describes the approaches to personnel management typical of the American management model since the middle of the 20th century, and analyzes the interaction between American, Japanese and European models of management. The article shows that over the last decade, the American management model has been losing the ground to some extent and acquiring some features of the Japanese model that, in its turn, has been taking over specific elements of European and American models. Then, the article outlines the part of business schools in training of managers in the U.S. and Europe, the impact of management models on them and the importance of coordinating business education processes with the needs of society. Besides, it details specifics of younger management models (Scandinavian, Asian, and Indian ones), compares their characteristics stemming from their traditional cultural, religious and social values, and reveals their priorities. In conclusion, the author determines the main features of the Ukrainian model of management and outlines the areas that require special attention in the process of professional training of managers in Ukraine.
